Words. Choose them carefully.

Having made a comment about randomness in my Saturday post, I spent a fair amount of time yesterday thinking about it and thinking about various comments until it hit me that I was way off track.

The problem wasn't a lack of randomness and fun, (I'm not really keen on either of those) but once mentioned that stuck with me. The actual problem would be better summed up as being a shortage of the important decision points that keep my brain engaged along with a lack of period flavour.
Toy Soldiers are always ready to play.
So I spent more time yesterday and today revisiting relevant historical actions, various old rules and some old games while thinking about what I do like based on experience. I was soon reminded of how much I enjoyed the Battle of Weeburg in February and where I had been headed.

So, I jotted down some outline rules, started to push some figures about and roll some dice.   Much better.

Toy Soldiers are also very patient, battle will recommence in a day or two,
Alas, after a good start, time was up! Duty called so the game halted but will resume another day.

A Work in Progress but Time is Running Out

Two weeks from today I leave for Huzzah!. While I could pack up and go tomorrow, there is still  a lot I'd like to do to get ready and it looks like the next week at least will  be ideal for much needed yardwork and gardening. Two expected down days have been compromised by  unexpected domestic duties. There has been some time to work on honing my 54mm rules but not enough time to get play more than a turn or two.  I really like the way the game is  heading though with a blend of old and new ideas but soon I need to haul my mind away from matters toy soldier and back to preparing terrain and figures for Huzzah. Don't be fooled by the absence of a grid, this game is intended to be able to played either on or off grid. Having gotten the scale monster our of my head for a bit, I've settled on a 4 figure "company" as the basic unit. ( Essentially what fits in a 4" square. ) This may be independent or be grouped into "battalions" of 2-4 companies. A coup...

Well, I wanted a good game and I got one! Not having a definite idea I decided to roll dice to pick and layout terrain items such as hills, woods, buildings and road entry points and to deploy all my ready Origawn Rebellion forces. Somewhere in the Origawn Territory, Advance Guards clash. I had been having some fun experimenting with using a 3" grid for measuring only and with playing around with 2 grid units but in the end, based on the current size of the incomplete armies, I decided to just go with the 6" grid with a unit per grid square except in cases of massed battalions where 2 units could be in a square and artillery which takes two adjacent squares, one for the gun and one for the limbers, caissons and so forth. The armies deploy directly from the march. Both armies were composed of one cavalry and three infantry brigades supported by two batteries. They're Back! Doug Miller 40mm Landsknechts are back!

Bless the internet, and, I suspect, the blogosphere. About 15 years ago, I bought three Doug Miller Landsknecht figures ( yes the author of the old Osprey Landsknect book ),  through the Michigan Toy Soldier Company if memory serves. I then found Doug's old website on line but by the time I had spare funds, it was gone. This spring I was surprised to receive an email from Doug saying that he had heard that I was looking for more of his figures. I didn't ask him how he knew but a  BIG  thank you to whoever tipped him off and gave him my email. 1525 (Doug Miller ) and Elastolin recruits. Anyway, when I got home from visiting family yesterday, the package was waiting on the kitchen table ( Of course).   I still don't have ample funds and don't realllly  need  more 16thC figures but do have a box full of Elastolin kits that I got cheap, BUT they are mostly duplicates of a few very active poses rather than the nice, useful, standing or advancing figures.
